Integrating Business Research and Business Practice Through Business-Scientists

Co-Sponsors: SMS Executive Discovery Series

University of St. Thomas, Opus College of Business

Friday, October 18, 2019

Overview

Are you interested in conducting relevant, top-quality research? Business schools continue to search for a means to produce industry-relevant research without undermining the perceived quality of business research programs. The answer already exists on many campuses.

In recent decades, prominent academic medical schools have institutionalized a faculty model designed to integrate research with practice that produces research that is rigorous and relevant. These faculty are often described as either translational scientists or physician-scientists. These tenure track faculty connect research and practice by practicing their trade as doctors, while also making fundamental contributions to knowledge by conducting basic science research. These scholars operate in "Pasteur’s quadrant", and produce research that is relevant and rigorous.

The purpose of the Business-Scientist SMS Extension is to bring together a group of faculty who are interested in (1) building a community of business-scientists who aim to advance knowledge of business by generating high-impact research and also being directly involved in practice; and (2) who seek to institutionalize the business-scientist model for the benefit of advancing the volume and quality of business-relevant research.

The program will include presentations from C-Suite executives from Fortune 500 companies, an expert on translational science from the National Science Foundation, pioneering business-scientists, and outstanding faculty like yourself!
