Welcome From the Program Chairs

Dear Colleagues:

It is with great enthusiasm that we invite you to Berlin for the 36th SMS Annual International Conference! The 19th SMS Annual International Conference was held here in 1999, and Berlin is still as fascinating a city as it was then. Of course, it had has a rich history from the era of the Prussian kings to the German re-unification and fall of the Iron Curtain. But Berlin today is a modern and vibrant city that attracts people from all over the world and is interesting in all aspects. Berlin is the ideal location to come together, be inspired, and discuss topics that are relevant for all of us.

The theme of this conference, “Strategies That Move the World,” is ambitious and offers many different ways for you to contribute. We live in exciting times that present great opportunities, such as globalization and digitalization, but we also face monumental challenges—for instance, climate change, a rising world population, and increasing inequality. While we are writing these lines, the European project, once a symbol of hope for economic as well as political integration, balances on a knife's edge because of the enormous budget deficits many countries have to address. How can our strategic management discipline contribute to addressing these real-world opportunities and challenges? How can we, as strategy scholars, ensure that our research is practically relevant, and that we support firms and institutional actors in (re-)defining their roles within society? How will these real-world challenges impact existing paradigms of strategic management and change our understanding of extant theoretical models?

We encourage proposal submissions that range from theoretical perspectives to empirical analyses dealing with our main theme and the different subthemes in our Call for Papers. We will do our best to stimulate interesting and engaged discussions, and organize thought-provoking keynote speakers and panels with well-known colleagues as well as prominent representatives from the business practice and the political arena. And yes, we hope that you also like our social program and all the other things that make Berlin so attractive.

We are excited to see you in Berlin 2016!
