New Doctoral Summit

Sunday, December 16, 2018

Academic Centre, Level 2, AC7 LT

Overview

The New Doctoral Summit will engage a group of early stage or aspiring doctoral students who have just started their doctoral programs or aspire to do one in the field of management. It will include about 60 participants and preference will be given to doctoral students who are within the first two years of the doctoral programs and are just beginning to think about ideas for their dissertations. We will also invite aspiring doctoral students who have already decided to pursue a doctoral program in strategy but are still in the process of applying to doctoral programs and are crafting their statements of purpose.  We are exploring options to live stream the sessions for this workshop.

Tentative Program:

Welcome remarks and introduction (09:00-09:30)

Session 1: Recent developments in empirical strategy research and opportunities for doctoral students (09:45-11:15)
How do the new developments in empirical strategy research such as like Big Data. machine learning and experimental research provide an opportunity for aspiring scholars? What kinds of problems can they enable researchers explore that were not possible before?

Session 2: Strategies for data collection for aspiring researchers who intend pursuing new empirical techniques including partnering with firms (11:30-13:00)
How should aspiring management scholars who intend to make use of these techniques gather data especially in data starved contexts? Which types of new questions can be addressed and which new insights may emerge from these contexts?

Session 3: How to publish? – author's perspective (14:45-15:15)
Experiences of authors who have used the new techniques listed above that have recently been accepted in a top tier journal. What are the typical issues to deal with and which strategies are useful to accelerate publication?

Panel: How to publish? – Editor’s perspective (15:30-17:00)
Experience of Editors and Associate Editors of top tier journals who have shepherded such papers to provide insights on the thresholds for publishing such work.

Breakout Sessions (17-00-18:00)
Students will be encouraged to come up with research questions along with which data sources and methods they would use to address these questions.

Closing Remarks (18-15-18:30)
