The world of business is changing rapidly. Digitization and artificial intelligence are transforming the nature of work, enabling new business models, new organizational forms, and new modes of entrepreneurship. The SMS Special Conference in Hangzhou seeks to bring together ambitious and cutting-edge research that explores this "Brave New World." We aim to showcase work that not only sheds new light on these emerging phenomena, but also examines the implications of these trends for existing research and practice. We aspire to foster an engaged and critical dialog, drawing together not only leading scholars from Asia and around the world, but also executives and practitioners who grapple with these phenomena on a daily basis.

Throughout the fall, the SMS Board of Directors has continued conversations with our partners at the Zhejiang University School of Management to discuss options regarding the Special Conference. Unfortunately, given the continuing uncertainty about the COVID-19 pandemic and how it may play out, it seems unlikely that we can successfully host a physical conference in the near future. Additionally, given that a key purpose of the conference was to organize an in-person gathering in China, shifting to a virtual format does not seem appropriate. We have therefore decided to cancel the conference rather than postpone a second time.
Having already postponed the conference once, we do not want to keep shifting the conference date. Instead, we hope to reconvene a few years from now, when, hopefully, the pandemic is behind us, and we can revisit the possibility of hosting a conference in Hangzhou in partnership with Zhejiang University School of Management and Alibaba Business Group.
We want to sincerely thank Zhejiang University School of Management and Alibaba Business Group for their willingness to partner with us for this conference; the conference committee for their hard work on the conference program; and our members for their continued support of this program.
We hope to begin planning another conference in Hangzhou soon!
