AWARD CRITERIA
The award is conferred in recognition of significant and enduring service that made an outstanding and distinguished contribution to the Strategic Management Society and its members.
The recipient is a person who has rendered lengthy, significant, and effective service to the SMS and its members. Recipients can be selected based on both volunteer and compensated work contributed to the field and/or the Society.
Current members of the Board and current leaders of program activities (journals, conferences, research funding) are not eligible. Officers of the SMS are not normally eligible until 5 years after completion of their service.
Nomination Process:
SMS Members are invited each year to nominate deserving members for the Awards and Honors Committee to review. Nomintions include:
- Name of the nominated individual
- Explanation for why the individual is deserving of the SMS Service Award
The recipient of this award is selected by a subcommittee appointed by the SMS Awards & Honors Committee.
SMS Service Award 2025 Recipient:
Constance Helfat
Constance E. Helfat has been a part of the SMS community for almost three decades and is a central scholar in the research field of dynamic capabilities, technological innovation, and the evolution of firms and industries. She has devoted over 10 years of her professional life to significant service to the SMS community, particularly through her work as a Co-Editor of SMJ from 2013 to 2020, but also through leadership and community stewardship via her role on the Board of Directors from 2022 to 2024. Beyond her editorial service, Connie has also played a pivotal role in mentoring junior scholars through her long-standing leadership of the Junior Faculty Strategy Research Summer Camp at Dartmouth.
About Constance:
Constance Helfat is the J. Brian Quinn Professor in Technology and Strategy at the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth. She has written extensively on the dynamic capabilities of firms and managers, technological innovation, and the dynamics of diversification and vertical integration. Professor Helfat served as a Co-editor of the Strategic Management Journal (SMJ) from 2013-2020, as an Associate Editor of SMJ from 2007-2013, and she now serves as a Consulting Editor of SMJ. She also edited or co-edited three special issues of SMJ as well as an SMS Blackwell handbook. From 2022-2024, Professor Helfat served on the Board of the Strategic Management Society. Professor Helfat is a Fellow of the Strategic Management Society, a Foundations Scholar of the Knowledge and Innovation Interest Group of the SMS, a Fellow of the Academy of Management, and she received the Distinguished Scholar Award from the TIM Division of the AoM.
