The Strategic Management Society (SMS) is pleased to announce the appointment of Alvaro Cuervo-Cazurra as the inaugural SMS Collections Editor for a three-year term that began in April 2026.
SMS Collections are curated bundles of previously published articles from Strategic Management Journal, Strategic Entrepreneurship Journal, and Global Strategy Journal. Each Collection centers around a selected theme and is accompanied by an original introduction, synthesizing key findings, advancing contemporary debates, and uncovering emerging opportunities for future research.
The SMS Publications Committee established the Collections Editor role to strengthen the Society’s ability to curate and amplify research across its journal portfolio. Following an international call for applications launched in January 2025, and a rigorous evaluation process conducted by the Collections Editor Search Committee, Cuervo-Cazurra was unanimously recommended for appointment and approved by the SMS Board of Directors in March 2026.
Alvaro Cuervo-Cazurra is a globally recognized scholar whose research examines how institutions, ownership, and contextual factors shape value creation, particularly in emerging markets. His contributions to the field have been widely recognized, including election as a Fellow of the Academy of International Business, the receipt of a Journal of International Business Studies Silver Medal, and an Honorary Doctorate from Copenhagen Business School.
He brings extensive editorial experience to the role. As Co-Editor of Global Strategy Journal from 2016 to 2024, he played a central role in elevating the journal’s impact and global standing. He has also served as Reviewing Editor at Journal of International Business Studies, and has contributed to numerous leading journals—including Academy of Management Journal, Academy of Management Review, and Journal of Management Studies—as an editor or editorial board member.
Cuervo-Cazurra is widely recognized for his open-minded and constructive approach to scholarship, engaging diverse methodologies and perspectives. His work, spanning theoretical, quantitative, and case-based research, reflects a strong commitment to pluralism and scholarly rigor.
In his new role, Cuervo-Cazurra brings a compelling vision for the continued development of SMS Collections. His priorities include mapping foundational areas of strategic management to identify gaps and opportunities, developing “living” Collections that evolve as new research emerges, and expanding the reach of Collections across academic and practitioner audiences.
The Publications Committee expressed strong confidence that Cuervo-Cazurra’s leadership will enhance the visibility, impact, and long-term development of SMS Collections.
