The Strategic Management Society (SMS) is seeking applications from members to join the SMS Practitioner Strategy Committee. Selected members are expected to begin their service immediately for a one-year term ending December 31, 2027, with the opportunity to renew for two additional terms.

The SMS vision is to bring academics and practitioners together to accelerate thought leadership in strategic management. The Practitioner Strategy Committee helps the Society act on that vision. It carries cutting-edge research into the business community and brings the questions and experience of business leaders back into SMS research, teaching, and outreach. The Committee works toward three goals:

  • Attract a broader practitioner audience and foster dialogue between academic research and the needs of the business industry.
  • Engage top business leaders and consultants to inform future research, teaching, and outreach, producing practical insights that advance the field.
  • Create opportunities for meaningful interaction between academics and practitioners that drive advances in both research and practice.

Working alongside the Committee Chair and current members, appointees will contribute to one or more of the following areas:

  • Recruiting practitioner speakers for SMS content forums such as the Strategy Imagination Forum, webinars, and conference plenaries and special sessions;
  • Developing channels for practice-oriented content around SMS topics, including the Big Six Questions of Strategic Management;
  • Connecting senior business leaders and consultants with SMS journals, conferences, and content;
  • Identifying conference sessions of practitioner interest for the Business Insights Collection; and
  • Working with other SMS committees to increase practitioner participation in the Society.

Additional information about the SMS Practitioner Strategy Committee can be found in the Committee’s Charter.

The Committee meets virtually each quarter, with occasional follow-up by email or phone, and reports on its progress to the SMS Board of Directors before each Board meeting. Members should expect to spend about 20 hours a year on Committee work.

SMS Membership is required, and candidates should have the following qualifications:

  • Commitment to the SMS mission: Understanding of and commitment to the Society’s mission, vision, strategic priorities, and governing principles.
  • Business engagement: Experience as a business leader, consultant, or practice-engaged scholar, with an interest in connecting rigorous research to strategic decision-making.
  • Professional network: Ability to draw on personal connections to engage senior practitioners with SMS programs and activities.
  • Initiative: Willingness to propose and lead new work, such as new programs, conference contributions, or membership growth efforts.

In addition to the details provided above, expectations for all SMS Board Committee Members can be found in these Guidelines.
