In Memoriam of Mike Wright

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

It is with great sadness that we share with you that Mike Wright, Professor of Entrepreneurship at Imperial College, passed away on November 25, 2019. Professor Wright was a respected and valued colleague, who will be sorely missed.

Mike was a devoted academic scholar who focused his research on topics of high practical relevance. He published over 50 books and 400 articles with more than 75,000 google scholar citations. His research has led to extensive media coverage as well as being ranked #1 worldwide for publications in academic entrepreneurship. In light of his significant contributions to the theory and practice of management, Mike was recognized as a Fellow of the Strategic Management Society and the British Academy and held an honorary doctorate from the University of Ghent. Importantly, his research provided insights into issues of great importance to industry and government which have influenced policy decision-making as well as promoting further scholarly inquiry.

Prior to joining Imperial College, Mike was a Professor of Financial Studies at Nottingham University Business School where he founded the Centre for Management Buyout Research and Private Equity Research (CMBOR) in 1986, which moved with him to Imperial College in 2011. Since its founding, CMBOR collects data on management buyouts and private equity firms and produces well-respected reports to provide a better understanding of the economic and governance impact of these alternative investment vehicles. Due to Mike’s leadership, the research reports of the center have influenced legislation in the UK and Europe, as well as providing an important tool for investors. Mike served as a member of the British Private Equity and Venture Capital Association Research Advisory Board (BVCA), which is the industry body and public policy advocate for the private equity and venture capital industry in the UK.

In addition to his interests in private equity and management buyouts, Mike’s research on technology based spin-offs and the evolving role of universities in the commercialization of research has been seminal in the field of entrepreneurship. Since university spin-offs are seen as an important mechanism for technological development and economic growth, Mike’s work has contributed to legislation and the establishment of numerous technology transfer offices in order to promote spin-off creation.

Mike was an exemplary colleague who contributed to the academic profession in numerous ways. Always very sociable, Mike enjoyed collaborating with others in the pursuit of greater knowledge. He truly epitomized and was a “nice guy” who went out of his way to support junior colleagues and promoted their academic careers. He genuinely enjoyed the academic life, the quest for knowledge, and working with colleagues from around the globe.

He served as co-editor of Strategic Entrepreneurship Journal and Academy of Management Perspectives. He was editor of Entrepreneurship Theory and Practice, and co-editor of the Journal of Management Studies. He was the Past Chair of the Academy of Management Entrepreneurship Division and a recipient of that Division’s Mentor Award. We will truly miss his warm smile and cheery demeanor as well as his considerable impact on the profession.
