Strategic Human Capital IG: Call for Participants

The Strategic Human Capital Interest Group is now accepting applications for the Pre-Tenure Mentoring Program 2021-2022 academic year. This year-long program aims to provide opportunities for pre-tenure faculty mentoring from senior faculty and peers within the IG. With the ongoing pandemic, we believe the mentoring program will continue serving the need for structured mentoring of junior faculty. We had a successful second year of the program, and we thank our incredible mentors— Sekou Bermiss, Rocio Bonet, Ben Campbell, Clint Chadwick, Russ Coff, Gina Dokko, Caroline Flammer, Martin Ganco, Connie Helfat, Rebecca Kehoe, David Kryscynski, Jiao Luo, Denisa Mindruta, Anthony Nyberg, Greg Reilly, and Henry Sauermann—who provided life-changing mentorship and support to our pre-tenure faculty last year.  We also thank our rep-at-large Flore Bridoux for providing invaluable support in organizing the program last year.

This year’s program will kick off in early October. The format for the mentoring program will be small groups consisting of 2 senior faculty mentors and 4 pre-tenure faculty. The groups are matched on mutual preferences, and the groups will stay intact for a year, connecting on quarterly calls via teleconferencing throughout the year. We provide sufficient structure for the quarterly calls, but also offer enough flexibility for groups to organize themselves as best serves their needs.

This year’s program will have the following structure (all meetings will be over Zoom):

•    Program kickoff and orientation – the first week of October
•    Four quarterly group calls – Oct, Jan, Apr, July – exact dates to be determined by groups
•    Two topic calls “Mind of an Editor” and “Tenure Letter Writers” featuring journal editors and senior scholars – calls in Dec and April
•    Brownbag series

Application Requirements:
To apply to participate in the program, please complete this short Google form by September 20, 2021:  https://forms.gle/tJL63hofNZPLqqeE8
The application is open to the members of the Strategic Human Capital Interest Group at the SMS. Participants are expected to attend all mentoring program meetings.
We will review the applications and notify participants by September 27th, 2021.
As we aim to maintain a good ratio of mentors to participants, the size of the program may be limited by the number of mentors. Should we need to select applicants, we will give priority to those who have not participated yet and, if needed, draw randomly among them.

Summary of the main time commitments:

•    Orientation (first week of Oct)—exact date and time TBD
•    Program kickoff (first week of Oct)—exact date and time TBD
•    Group quarterly calls (Oct, Jan, Apr, July)—TBD by groups
•    Topic calls (Dec, April)—TBD by organizers
•    Brown bags—TBD by organizers

Program Overview

This program is aimed at supporting doctoral students in the area of strategic human capital. The intended student participants will have passed their qualifiers and be in the process of working on their dissertations in the area of strategic human capital. The plan for the mentoring program will be to match junior faculty and doctoral students in small groups. We aim to have 2 faculty mentors and 3 doctoral students per group so that students can benefit from small group interactions with both mentors and peers. The groups will stay intact for a year, with the opportunity to scramble and join another mentoring group after this time. Specifically, after one year, participants can reapply to the program to get matched into a new group or may graduate into our pre-tenure faculty mentoring program. Doctoral mentoring groups will hold calls quarterly (exact time determined by groups), which may either focus on specific topics that we provide for guidance or on topics that groups determine themselves.

Following the application period, the organizers will form groups, and the kickoff call will take place in September.

This year’s program will have the following structure (all meetings will be over Zoom):

  • Program kickoff and orientation – Sept 2020
  • Four quarterly group calls – Oct, Jan, Apr, July – exact dates to be determined by groups
  • Job-market Q&A call with faculty “What’s in the mind of a Recruiting Committee”
  • Invitation to attend four topic calls from the pre-tenure mentoring program “Mind of an Editor” and “Tenure Letter Writers” featuring journal editors and senior scholars – calls in Sept, Dec, March, June
