The Untamed Issues of Strategy Workshop
Overview:
Jointly presented by the SMS San Francisco Program Co-Chairs and the SMS Practitioner Strategy Committee, as a continuation of SMR’s “Untamed Issues of Strategy” initiative, this dynamic workshop brings together business practitioners and scholars in an experimental collaborative effort to identify and address pressing challenges, followed by a dedicated networking lunch.
Topic:
The rapid pace of technology evolution, the rise of social tensions and the resurgence of great power geopolitics have created unprecedented levels of uncertainty for business and brought to the fore a new set of unsolved challenges for business, like how to capture value and advantage with AI and how to rethink the paradigm for global companies. This tests the learning system of the strategy profession including both theorists and practitioners at a time when the two sides operate relatively independently, relative to other applied professions like medicine and engineering. Addressing these gaps begins with identifying the Untamed Issues which are topical, significant and requiring new approaches.
Objective:
This session engages strategy practitioners and scholars in an interactive workshop format. Together, participants will:
- Create a list of the most important Untamed Issues
- Define what’s missing in current approaches
- Generate actionable ideas for closing the gap between theory and practice
- Foster a collaborative community dedicated to advancing these efforts
The session is open to all but especially to business managers, executives, consultants, and academics who have a keen interest in the issue of bridging the gap between theory and practice.
Format:
The workshop agenda will include:
- An introduction to the issue
- Presentation on the results of a new survey of CSOs and strategy academics
- A CSO’s perspective on the issues
- Roundtable discussions
- A networking lunch hosted by the SMS Practitioner Strategy Committee
Organizers:
The session is organized by Martin Reeves and Ulrich Pidun (BCG), Michael Moesgaard Andersen and George Stalk (SMS Practitioner Strategy Committee), and Saikat Chaudhuri, Jeff Reuer and Michael Leiblein (Strategic Management Review).
Participation Requirements:
Pre-registration is required. All participants must be registered attendees of the SMS Annual Conference in San Francisco.
