Description: The webinar discusses micro-foundations of “low-frequency” decision under uncertainty. These decisions are important, cannot rely on past data, and strategic decision-makers do not know future states and their probabilities. Following extant work on problem definition (Nickerson and Zenger, 2004), theorizing (Felin & Zenger, 2017), and mental representation (Csazar & Levinthal, 2016), the main takeaway is that strategic decision-makers learn by developing and testing alternative less reliable theories to challenge their status-quo perspective. Concrete examples show that these micro-foundations help to understand real decisions in established or entrepreneurial firms, and they can be used as a practical tool by managers and entrepreneurs. The E&S Insights Series seeks to bring together entrepreneurship scholars who can share teaching or research advice and experiences with our members.
