AWARD CRITERIA
The CK Prahalad Award for Scholarly Impact on Practice, introduced in 2011, was created to honor the legacy of CK Prahalad. The award recognizes excellence in the application of theory and research in practice. These include but are not limited to contributions to knowledge through the extraction of learning from practice; authored scholarly works that have substantively affected the practice of management; and/or the integration of research and practice.
A scholar-practitioner who has used applied learning to influence how theory and research guide practice is honored by this award. Special attention will be given to a scholar-practitioner whose contributions have shaped the understanding of global strategic leadership.
Nomination Process:
SMS Members are invited each year to nominate deserving members for the Awards and Honors Committee to review.
Nominations include:
- Nomination letter by an SMS Member for why the individual is deserving of the Award
- A full CV for the nominated individual
The recipient of this award is selected by a subcommittee appointed by the SMS Awards & Honors Committee.”

Ranjay Gulati
Ranjay Gulati is the Paul R. Lawrence MBA Class of 1942 Professor of Business Administration at Harvard Business School. Professor Gulati holds a Ph.D. from Harvard University. He is a global leader and expert on leadership, strategy, and organizational issues, particularly for building high growth organizations in turbulent markets. Gulati’s most recent book “Deep Purpose: The Heart and Soul of High-Performance Companies” offers a reassessment and defense of purpose as a management ethos, and was picked to be among the best business books by Forbes, Thinkers 50, and the Next Big Idea Club. Professor Gulati is the past-President of the Business Policy and Strategy Division at the Academy of Management and fellow of the Strategic Management Society and the Academy of Management. He was ranked as one of the top ten most cited scholars in Economics and Business over a decade by ISI-Incite. The Economist, Financial Times, and the Economist Intelligence Unit have listed him as among the top handful of business school scholars whose work is most relevant to management practice.
