Call for Nominations: MI Co-Editor

Call for Media Innovations Co-Editor Nominations

Nomination Deadline: August 31, 2019

The Strategic Management Society and Wiley are jointly involved in the publication of leading scholarly journals in the field of strategic management. The Strategic Management Journal, the Strategic Entrepreneurship Journal, and the Global Strategy Journal, collectively referred to as the SMS journals, promote the development and dissemination of advances in the field while maintaining the highest standards of intellectual rigor combined with practical relevance.

SMS and Wiley are seeking nominations for one or more Media Innovations Co-Editors to work alongside the current Co-Editor of Media Innovations, Charles Williams, and the Co-Editors at the three journals. The new Co-Editor(s) will likely assume duties at the beginning of January 2020 and will be appointed for renewable three-year terms. The overall goal of Co-Editors of Media Innovations will be to extend the reach and depth of scholarship of the SMS journals and strategic management scholars by identifying opportunities for innovation in creating and disseminating their intellectual contributions through digital media. The Co-Editors both conceptualize and help implement online innovations for the SMS journals.

As a Co-Editor for SMS Journal Media Innovation (for short, a “Media Innovations Co-Editor”), the Media Innovations Editors work with the other SMS journal Co-Editors to promote material accepted for publication through new channels.

Media Innovations Co-Editors are responsible for the following activities, each of which involves active collaboration with the other journal editors, the SMS leadership and staff, Wiley staff, and other relevant stakeholders.

Priorities: Continue to execute current activities, as well as substantial emphasis on developing new opportunities, including small scale experiments and larger-scale models.

Opportunities: Identify opportunities to enrich and/or move beyond the current published format of traditional journal articles via discussions and stand-alone contributions through digital media. Ongoing SMS media activities include management of social networks, content development for the media innovations website, publication dissemination and discussion, video content and discussions by authors and commentators, and virtual collections of seminal research topics, with opportunities to continue to innovate and experiment with new forums and formats. The emphasis is to identify opportunities that expand the intellectual impact of the SMS journals both to add value for existing audiences and to reach new or under-served audiences, including practitioners and students.

Implementation: Coordinate implementation and follow-through of innovations in collaboration with stakeholders at the SMS journals, including the SMS Publications Committee, SMS journal Co-Editors and Associate Editors, SMS staff, and Wiley staff. Some innovations are likely to be implemented by the SMS, others by the publisher, others jointly.

Each nominee should have the following qualifications:

  • Technology awareness: Awareness of current and emerging opportunities in online and other digital media.
  • Content insight: Insight about opportunities to enrich traditional intellectual content of the SMS journals and to generate new intellectual content.
  • Active and collaborative leadership: History of active leadership of substantial initiatives, combined with demonstrated ability to collaborate with other stakeholders.
  • Academic stature: Credibility within the SMS academic community as a strong scholar; stature equivalent to reputation needed for appointment as a traditional Co-Editor of the SMS journals.
  • Passion: Clear commitment to helping the SMS and its journals and the discipline move forward, both operationally and strategically.

Nominations, including self-nominations, will be accepted until August 31, 2019. Nominations should include:

  • The nominee’s name, email, and telephone number
  • A letter of up to 800 words summarizing the nominee’s qualifications relative to the criteria above
  • A current curriculum vitae
  • We will ask non-self-nominated candidates whether they are willing to stand for the position and, if so, to provide a statement of interest and qualification.

Nominations will be reviewed by a subcommittee of the Publication Committee of the SMS, which will recommend appointments to the SMS Board and Wiley.
