SMS India Special Conference in Hyderabad Senior Faculty Workshop

Sunday, December 16, 2018

Workshop Overview

Please join us for the Senior Faculty Workshop at the upcoming SMS India Special Conference in Hyderabad. The workshop will convene and engage with a group of senior faculty in India and Asia who are in middle to later stages of their academic careers.

Senior faculty of business schools in India and Asia have the distinct task of building the institution, sharing high teaching loads and enhancing the research capacity and the research visibility of their departments and schools. Both the schools that have embarked on a significant growth path as well as those that are at an early stage of development have been facing a serious shortage of senior faculty who have to shoulder the responsibility of leading and managing the transition. The workshop will target about 25 to 30 senior faculty. These faculty will preferably be engaged in leadership roles in their respective academic departments / areas / groups and schools.

The workshop will be interactive and loosely structured around the following key questions:

  1. Given the severe shortage of business faculty in the region, what challenges does one face in attracting and retaining young faculty? How does one go about building teaching and research capacity in rapidly growing business schools?
  2. How are the expectations from a current generation faculty member different from that of the earlier generation? How do senior faculty cope with the changing expectations?
  3. How could senior faculty reinvent and renew their teaching, practice engagement, and research agenda, and continue to remain relevant?
  4. How could senior faculty mentor and create space for young colleagues to blossom?

The workshop will feature several distinguished scholars and academic leaders who will interact with participants in round table and small group discussions, panel presentations, and informal conversations during the coffee-breaks. We are planning to have more than one panel and at least eight to ten panelists. Each panelist will have about 10-15 minutes to present. The rest of the time will be allocated to discussions, experience sharing and brain-storming.
