SUMMARY:Advancing Research on AI\, International Business\, and Global Talent
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by the Global Strategy Interest Group \nThis webinar brings together leading scholars to explore how artificial intelligence is reshaping international business and global strategy. As AI transforms how firms compete\, organize work\, manage talent\, and expand across borders\, it also raises important new research questions. The discussion will examine what AI means for global strategy\, how it is changing the geography and management of talent\, and what emerging research is teaching us about firms operating in an increasingly technology-driven world. \nFree for members | $39 for non-members  \nCan’t attend live? We still encourage you to register — you’ll be among the first to receive the session recording once it’s released. \nSpeakers \nPrithwiraj (Raj) Choudhury is a Professor of Organization Behavior in the Management Department at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) and a globally recognized expert on the Future of Work. Prior to LSE\, he served on the faculties at Wharton and Harvard Business School. He is also an Associate Editor at Management Science and Strategic Management Journal and incoming co-Editor in Chief at Journal of Organization Design. Raj studies how technology is changing where we work and how we work and has pioneered research on how ‘Work from anywhere’ (WFA) affects workers\, organizations\, communities\, and smaller towns. He also studies the impact of AI on organizations and how AI\, automation and Digital Twins can help both desk workers and deskless workers work from anywhere.  Prior to academia\, he worked at McKinsey & Company and Microsoft\, obtained his doctorate from Harvard and earned degrees from the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur and Indian Institute of Management\, Calcutta. \nThomas Lindner is a professor of international business with affiliations at Copenhagen Business School\, the University of Innsbruck\, and WU Vienna. In his research\, Thomas works on understanding how companies make business decisions\, with a focus on the global political environment\, the role of artificial intelligence\, and company finances. His research predominantly uses quantitative methods\, and Thomas has contributed to developing such methods in the context of editorials\, perspective papers\, and special interest groups. In his policy-oriented work\, Thomas works together with central banks and governments to improve data-driven decision-making as well as the education of gifted students. In his work oriented towards business practice\, Thomas advises companies on internationalization strategies\, the valuation of acquisition targets\, and on developing measurement systems for social impact. Outside work\, Thomas enjoys skiing\, beach volleyball\, reading science fiction\, and travelling the world. \nPatricio Duran is an Associate Professor of Management and International Business and Academic Program Director for Graduate Programs at the Robins School of Business\, University of Richmond. He also serves as Representative-at-Large for the Global Strategy Interest Group of the Strategic Management Society. He has published in leading management and international business journals\, including the Academy of Management Journal\, Journal of International Business Studies\, Journal of Management\, Journal of Management Studies\, Global Strategy Journal\, and Entrepreneurship Theory and Practice. His work has received several international recognitions. At the University of Richmond\, he leads international learning experiences and consulting-based projects that connect students with firms addressing real global expansion challenges\, including the development and internationalization of AI-based business models from emerging to developed markets.

SUMMARY:Past and Future of the Strategy Field: Healthy Plurality or Disintegration?
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by the Cooperative Strategies Interest Group \nFree for Members | $39 for Non-Members \nCan’t attend live? We still encourage you to register — you’ll be among the first to receive the session recording once it’s released. \nThe webinar will: i) explore whether the field of strategic management is healthy and slowly but surely accumulating knowledge over time\, or instead\, fragmenting into too many phenomenon-centric theoretically-disintegrated subfields that don’t cumulate knowledge (or that talk past to each other)\, and\, ii) discuss what is the role of theory\, of different kind\, in informing this dynamic and in resolving the tension between phenomenological fragmentation and the integration/accumulation of knowledge. \nJustin Frake (Ross\, Michigan) will start the webinar by presenting his work on “what is strategy?” which documents key trends in our field over the last decades. The patterns documented therein will be a shared context for debate and discussion. Joe Mahoney (Gies\, Illinois)\, Mary Benner (Carlson\, Minnesota; editor SMJ) and Rodolphe Durand (HEC Paris) will contribute their arguments\, own original work\, experience\, and vision related to these issues. \nPanelists:\nMary Benner is a Professor in the Strategic Management and Entrepreneurship Department. Her research\, at the intersection of organization theory and strategic management\, explores how firms innovate and adapt to technological changes. She has studied the effects of systematic process management practices such as ISO 9000 and Six Sigma on firms’ innovation and responses to new technologies\, and is currently examining the influence of financial markets and securities analysts in how established firms innovate and address the opportunities and challenges of technological change. Her research is published in leading academic journals and has won several awards\, including the Academy of Management Review’s Decade Award and Best Paper Award. She has been a Co-Editor of the Strategic Management Journal since January 2023. She served as a Senior Editor at Strategy Science in 2022\, as an Associate Editor at Administrative Science Quarterly from 2012 to 2021\, and as a Senior Editor at Organization Science from 2010 to 2012. She also serves on the editorial board of the Academy of Management Review. She has a PhD in management from Columbia University\, an MBA from Stanford’s Graduate School of Business\, and a BS in economics from the University of Minnesota. \nRodolphe Durand is the Joly Family Professor of Purposeful Leadership and the academic director of the Purpose Center. He founded the Society and Organizations Institute (S&O) and led it until September 2024. Rudy’s primary research interests concern the normative and cognitive dimensions of firms’ performance\, and especially the consequences for firms of defining their purpose and coping with the current major environmental and social challenges. As a member of Boards (in listed and private firms\, in non-profit organizations)\, the impact committee\, and the purpose committee (comité de mission)\, Rudy helps multiple organizations develop\, implement\, and assess impact strategies that value a firm’s purpose and its intangible assets. Rudy is also a prolific author of books where he puts in perspective the decline of ideologies\, the evolution of capitalism\, and the new foundations of management\, notably: Organizational Evolution and Strategic Management (Sage\, 2006)\, The Pirate Organization: Lessons from the Fringed of Capitalism (co-authored with JP Vergne\, Harvard Press\, 2013)\, and Organizations\, Strategy\, and Society: The Orgology of Disorganized Worlds (Routledge\, 2014). For his work\, he received the American Sociological Association’s R. Scott Award in 2005\, the European Academy of Management/Imagination Lab Award for Innovative Scholarship in 2010\, was inducted as a Fellow of the Strategic Management Society in 2014\, and was granted a Doctor Honoris Causa from UC Louvain in 2019. \nJoseph Mahoney is the Caterpillar Chair of Business at the Gies College of Business\, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. His research interest is organizational economics\, and he has published more than 90 journal articles\, authored the influential Economic Foundations of Strategy\, and served in leadership roles across multiple scholarly organizations. He was elected a Fellow of both the Academy of Management and the Strategic Management Society and was named one of Poets & Quants’ Top 50 Undergraduate Professors of Business.\nIn 2005\, he published Economic Foundations of Strategy\, which has been adopted by over 45 doctoral programs. He served as Associate Editor of the strategy field’s flagship journal\, Strategic Management Journal (2006-2015)\, and as Associate Editor of the Academy of Management Review (2018-2020). For the 2008-2009 academic year\, he served as Chair of the Strategy (STR) Division of the Academy of Management.\nHe is the winner of the Irwin Outstanding Educator Award from the STR Division of the Academy of Management. He has been elected to the Academy of Management (AOM) Fellows and to the Strategic Management Society (SMS) Fellows. \nJustin Frake research investigates how micro-level behaviors drive macro-level outcomes. Substantively\, my research focuses on strategic human capital\, misconduct\, and politics in the workplace. I created whatisstrategy.org to empirically investigate common concerns about the field of strategy. \n  \n  \n  \nModerators:\nFrancisco Brahm\nShivaram Divarakonda

What does this mean for scholars in strategic management? Four leading researchers share how they are integrating agentic AI into their own methodological practice\, from data collection and coding to analysis and writing. Matt Beane (UC Santa Barbara)\, Gwendolyn Lee (Purdue)\, Joshua Gans (University of Toronto)\, and Claudine Gartenberg (Wharton) discuss what works\, what fails\, and what guardrails matter. The conversation will address practical considerations such as reproducibility\, validation\, and transparency\, as well as broader implications for the craft of research itself. This session is intended for scholars at any career stage who want to think rigorously about when and how to deploy these tools in their own work. \n Matt Beane studies how we build skill in work involving intelligent machines like AI and robotics. His award-winning research has been published in top management outlets such as Administrative Science Quarterly\, Organization Science and Harvard Business Review\, he publishes in technical outlets such as CHI\, HRI\, he has spoken on the TED stage\, and he is the author of The Skill Code: How to Save Human Ability in an Age of Intelligent Machines (HarperCollins). He is co-founder and CEO of SkillBench\, a a platform that turns AI usage data into action – so CTOs can steer transformation and software developers can grow through it. In 2012 he was selected as a Human-Robot Interaction Pioneer\, and in 2021 was named to the Thinkers50 Radar list. Matt is a Digital Fellow with the Stanford Digital Economy Lab and MIT’s Initiative on the Digital Economy. \nJoshua Gans is Jeffrey S. Skoll Chair of Technical Innovation and Entrepreneurship and Professor of Strategic Management\, Rotman School of Management\, University of Toronto; Chief Economist of the Creative Destruction Lab and cofounder of All Day TA. He also holds honorary appointments in the Department of Economics and Munk School\, University of Toronto\, and Melbourne Business School and am affiliated with the NBER\, Schwartz-Reisman Institute\, Acceleration Consortium\, e61 Institute and Luohan Academy. He is also a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences\, Australia and the Royal Society of Canada.\nHe is an economist who studies innovation\, entrepreneurship\, and business strategy. My research focuses on how firms and markets adapt to technological change\, with particular emphasis on artificial intelligence\, blockchain technology\, and digital platforms. \n Claudine Gartenberg is Associate Professor of Management at the Wharton School\, University of Pennsylvania. Her research focuses on organizational strategy\, examining how ownership structure\, corporate purpose\, and compensation practices shape how firms compete and perform. Her work is published in leading journals including Management Science\, Organization Science\, and Review of Economic Studies.\nHer current research investigates how AI is reshaping organizations\, including how firms are restructuring decision-making\, reallocating work\, and repositioning strategically in response to these changes. \n Professor Gwendolyn (Gwen) Lee has published numerous research articles with managerial impact in premier academic journals\, including the Academy of Management Journal\, Academy of Management Review\, Organization Science\, Strategic Management Journal\, and Strategy Science. Her research program advances the frontier of strategic management by contributing novel perspectives to a foundational research question: How do firms respond to disruptions that change how value is created and captured? Gwen is exploring industry-shaping dynamics in the generation of sustainable energy\, the transformative impact of machine learning and AI on strategic decision-making\, and critical challenges in the governance of AI. She obtained her Ph.D. from the University of California at Berkeley (Management of Technology Fellow)\, and M.S. and B.S. degrees from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (Burchard Scholar). With her work experiences as an engineer\, management consultant\, and academic researcher\, Gwen has explored and enjoyed living globally in America\, Asia\, and Europe. She looks forward to opportunities for improving managerial practices and upgrading global human capital\, particularly through the integration of science\, technology\, engineering\, math (STEM) and business.

DESCRIPTION:Important Hotel Update! \nDoubleTree Hilton\, Sonoma County offers special price for SSU extension participants\n$139/night (includes parking). \nBook early to secure your spot here. \nOVERVIEW \nSpeakers: \n\nKeynote: Professor Jay Barney\, University of Utah\nProfessor Elizabeth Pontikes\, UC Davis\nMr. Zachary Kushel\, Marin Sonoma Impact Ventures\, Founder and Managing Partner\nMs. Susan Griffin-Black\, Founder & Co-CEO\, EO products\nProfessor Tony Tong (University of Colorado\, Boulder)\nMr. Tony Magee\, Founder\, Lagunitas Brewing Company\nMr. Lance Cottrell\, President & Chair of Board of Directors\, North Bay Angels\nProfessor Oana Branzei\, Ivey Business School\, Canada\nMr. Brian Bauer\, Co-founder\, President and CEO\, Resynergi\nMs. Aishwarya Kancharla\, Founder AmmammaTati and Sandy Loam\nMr. Ali Pourghadir (President\, Jackson Family Investments and Global Finance Leader at Jackson Family Wines)\nMs. Eva Blaisdell\, Lady Rocket (Founder Copernic Space)\n\nThe world is witnessing a major tectonic upheaval with the emergence of companies with Trillion Dollar valuations.  These companies span several industries and business lines and are redefining the opportunity space for entrepreneurs.  With the tech-domain spawning unicorns and beyond\, it is very likely that strategy and entrepreneurship theory\, research\, and practice will focus on such phenomenon.  There is no doubt that the actions of the ultra-behemoths and the unicorns have a great impact on how the business landscape will evolve.  The idea of pursuing stakeholder orientation and purpose with progress is being heavily debated around the world in the context of large established firms as there are likely “trade-offs” between these goals. \nEntrepreneurship encompasses several firms which are beyond the most eye-catching and media-attention garnering firms.  Nascent firms emerge which are unencumbered by the “trade-offs” encountered by established firms.  Just as ‘born global’ firms\, there are firms that are ‘born to impact\,’ beyond focusing only on financial growth.  Some may essentially be ‘niche’ firms\, incredibly innovative\, and be under the radar in the competitive space.  However\, they compete for customers and capital alongside high financial returns-oriented firms and face unique challenges in the process. \nThe North Bay region is a cradle for such innovative firms (in wine and non-wine industries) right in the backyard of the heavy and high-tech firms.  Several of these firms have unique business models that involve multiple stakeholders in the process of creating broader societal impact.  Such ventures need a robust entrepreneurial ecosystem with venture capitalists\, angel investors\, private capital\, banking\, and other institutions to support their existence and growth. \nThis extension is focused on building conversations and dialogue among scholars and practitioners interested in topics of stakeholder engagement\, impact/purpose-driven/social  enterprises\, responsible\, mindful\, and mission-driven capitalism\, sustainability\, and venture capital.  The program involves practitioner and academic panels providing opportunities for participants to engage in rich discussions and cultivate meaningful connections and partnerships.  The extension is expected to advance theory\, research\, and practice in the pursuit of responsible and balanced business models that enrich the world we live in. \nKey Takeaways:  \n\nNot all firms are born equal— How do entrepreneurial firms find their place amidst giant competitors? What strategies do they use to entice and retain their customers?\nWhat attributes do investors (venture capitalists\, banks\, angel investors) look for in entrepreneurial pitches/ventures? Have the attributes changed over time?\nHow should you strategize to capture investor attention and commitment?\nIs sustainability orientation a fashion or a fad OR is it a deeper commitment for some firms?\nWhat are some of the business models that have sustainability at the core and how do they gain competitive advantage?\nWhat are some unique business models that involve multiple stakeholders in the process of creating broader societal impact?\nHow do you design organizations for pursuing purposeful progress?\n\nHost Institution: The School of Business\, Sonoma State University (Student Center Ballroom) \n \nDate and Time: Wednesday\, October 15\, 2025\, from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. PDT \nRegistration Fees: \n\nSMS Members: $150 USD\nNon-Members: $175 USD\n\nSponsors: Stewart Family Foundation (Dr. Christopher Stewart and Mrs. Gladys Stewart) \nPROGRAM AND SCHEDULE \n08:30 to 09:00 – Registration & Coffee \n09:00 to 09:20 – Welcome speeches \nPlenary speech/Key note address (9.30 a.m. to 10.15 a.m.) \nKeynote Speaker: Professor Jay B. SUMMARY:The Untamed Issues of Strategy Workshop
DESCRIPTION:The Untamed Issues of Strategy Workshop\n  \nOverview:\nJointly presented by the SMS San Francisco Program Co-Chairs and the SMS Practitioner Strategy Committee\, as a continuation of SMR’s “Untamed Issues of Strategy” initiative\, this dynamic workshop brings together business practitioners and scholars in an experimental collaborative effort to identify and address pressing challenges\, followed by a dedicated networking lunch.  \n  \n \nTopic:  \nThe rapid pace of technology evolution\, the rise of social tensions and the resurgence of great power geopolitics have created unprecedented levels of uncertainty for business and brought to the fore a new set of unsolved challenges for business\, like how to capture value and advantage with AI and how to rethink the paradigm for global companies. Together\, participants will:  \n\nCreate a list of the most important Untamed Issues \nDefine what’s missing in current approaches \nGenerate actionable ideas for closing the gap between theory and practice  \nFoster a collaborative community dedicated to advancing these efforts \n\nThe session is open to all but especially to business managers\, executives\, consultants\, and academics who have a keen interest in the issue of bridging the gap between theory and practice.  \nFormat:\nThe workshop agenda will include:  \n\nAn introduction to the issue \nPresentation on the results of a new survey of CSOs and strategy academics \nA CSO’s perspective on the issues \nRoundtable discussions \nA networking lunch hosted by the SMS Practitioner Strategy Committee \n\nOrganizers:\nThe session is organized by Martin Reeves and Ulrich Pidun (BCG)\, Michael Moesgaard Andersen and George Stalk (SMS Practitioner Strategy Committee)\, and Saikat Chaudhuri\, Jeff Reuer and Michael Leiblein (Strategic Management Review).   \n  \n \nParticipation Requirements:\nPre-registration is required.
