SUMMARY:SMS 44th Annual Conference Istanbul
DESCRIPTION:SMS 44th Annual Conference: Strategic Management of Fault Lines\, Contradictions\, and Divergences\nThe SMS Conference in Istanbul coincides with the 30th anniversary of the highly influential edited volume of Fundamental Issues in Strategy: A Research Agenda\, published in 1994. In its introduction\, the editors\, Richard P. Rumelt\, Dan E. Schendel\, and David J. Teece\, define strategic management as an “interdisciplinary subject” that “may never enter an era of “normal science” by settling on a paradigm and exploring its implications. \nThe editors further predicted that “perhaps strategic management is pre-paradigmatic\, …\, probably always offer[ing] shifting perspectives and relatively incommensurable research approaches.” Consequently\, Rumelt\, Schendel\, and Teece identified “four fundamental issues posed in the form of questions [to] help define the field of strategic management”: How do firms behave? Why are firms different? What is the function of\, or value added by\, the headquarters unit in a multibusiness firm? What determines the success or failure of the firm in international competition? \nThey were right. The strategic management field did not converge to a single paradigm to represent another “Khunian model of science.” Instead\, the field evolved with new paradigms\, methodologies\, and new questions. As evidenced by the number of interest groups in SMS\, strategic management branched into sub-areas by building on the fundamentals of economics\, sociology\, psychology\, and other fields. With this proliferation of different paradigms\, the field expanded to include different units of analyses beyond firms\, such as knowledge\, relationships\, individuals\, and ecosystems. In isolation\, these paradigms are consistent with their respective disciplinary roots. However\, as part of the strategic management field\, the integrated view reveals conceptual fault lines\, contradictory predictions and prescriptions\, and divergences between theories and practice. \nIn the meantime\, some fundamental concepts that strategic management takes for granted in formulating those four questions and their extensions have become debatable. Globalization is no longer a global anthem; the world is moving from a unipolar state to an undecided but tumultuous period of competition among the emerging blocks of nation-states. Despite the anti-trust regulations\, global or otherwise\, industries are dominated by mega-firms with access to progressively granular data about their markets\, customers\, employees\, and governments. Governments identify some foreign firms as national security threats in addition to sanctioning them\, and multinational firms sanction nation-states depending on their home country’s foreign policies. Multinational firms increasingly must reconcile often opposing demands from their home versus host governments in a rapidly polarized and conflict-prone world. Distinctions between for-profit firms and not-for-profit organizations are mainly superficial since for-profit firms pursue not-for-profit investments\, and not-for-profit organizations have sizable profits and invest in profit-generating opportunities. \nIn 1994\, the emergence of fault lines\, divergences\, and contradictions among the paradigms of strategic management that are often unchallenged or even unrecognized was not predictable. Not surprisingly\, each paradigm also commands its echo chambers and silos in scholarship and practice. While efficient\, this type of specialization can potentially diminish the wealth of valuable insights that can emerge from constraining these paradigms with each other– that\, by finding ways to straddle multiple paradigms in practice\, is how firms precisely survive and grow. \nThis conference examines these and other fault lines\, contradictions\, and divergences among strategic management paradigms in scholarship and practice. İstanbul\, Türkiye\, with deep historical roots in multiple civilizations across millennia\, is perhaps the best location for this theme. The city has inspired countless thinkers with its beauty in the concurrence and amalgamation of literal and figurative contradictions\, divergences\, and fault lines. We hope the conference’s theme and location will similarly inspire strategic management scholars\, practitioners\, and students. \nClick here to visit the full event website

SUMMARY:Firms in the Lab: Frontiers of Experimentation
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an intensive workshop on lab experiments at Kadir Has University\, in the historic Balat neighborhood on the Golden Horn\, just a short hop on the M2 subway from the SMS Conference hotel. \nThe experimental method has enjoyed a remarkable renaissance of late. This conference extension aims to round up the latest developments in the field of strategy and organizations. We place a special focus on how experiments in our field may differ from those in others\, all the while retaining methodological rigor. We welcome both students and faculty interested in debating such questions as: \nWhat can we learn about firms by studying individuals and groups in a lab environment? \nHow can we use experiments to build as well as test theory about organizations? \nWhat distinguishes experiments that aim to contribute to firm-level research? \nWhich methods from adjacent behavioral disciplines can help us enhance sophistication? \nThe plan is for a focused event\, containing a mix of presentations\, panels\, and developmental sessions. Expert faculty will showcase the frontiers of the field and discuss the scope for lab studies in strategy. We are excited to feature: \nIdo Erev\, Professor of Behavioral Science at the Technion and prominent catalyst for the behavioral study of learning through experience\, \nPhanish Puranam\, Professor of Strategy and Organisation Design at INSEAD and co-founder of the Experimental Organization Science network \nMehmet Memecan\, founder and CEO of agricultural fintech Tarfin and experimenter with organizational processes. \nOnurcan Yilmaz\, Professor of Psychology at Kadir Has University and leader of the Istanbul Moral Intuitions Laboratory \nOur expert faculty also help consult on project ideas and experimental stimuli\, alongside key drivers of the experimental movement in strategy\, including Jerry Guo\, Ozgecan Kocak\, Franziska Lauenstein\, Gaël Le Mens\, Sheen Levine\, and Massimo Warglien. \nWe will have coffee breaks and lunch onsite. After the close around 6pm\, enjoy a walking tour to a nearby dinner location. \nFor more information\, please see the finalized extension agenda. \nRegistration Fees: \n\n\n\nSMS Members: 100 USD\nNon-Members: 125 USD\n\n\n\n  \nEvent Sponsors \n \nStill need to register for the SMS 44th Annual Conference in Istanbul? SUMMARY:Sustainability at the Crossroads: What's Next?
DESCRIPTION:Today’s grand societal challenges are unprecedented. The economic growth aspirations of firms historically have been driving carbon emissions and environmental pollution. A staggering $44 trillion\, half of the world’s GDP\, relies on nature. Climate risks jeopardize global wealth\, quality of life\, and economic growth. Despite heightened awareness and sustainability efforts\, these grand challenges persist\, demanding urgent action. “Globalization is evolving into a multi-stakeholder\, empathy-focused common culture of life\, beyond the transfer of goods and people” which places sustainability at the epicenter of this “cultural revolution”\, says Sabancı Holding CEO Cenk Alper at the 54th Davos Summit in 2024. Addressing grand challenges in general\, and considering environmental impact while accelerating economic performance in particular is a hitherto unsolved mystery facing organizations which\, once solved\, can unlock the potential for paving the way for a new “mission-driven capitalism”. Hence\, it becomes imperative for scholars\, businesspeople\, consultants\, and government officials to navigate these uncharted waters collectively. \nHowever\, sustainability is at a crossroads\, marked by faultlines between developed and developing economies\, academia and industry\, varying political ideologies\, and the dichotomy between businesses genuinely committed to sustainability and those who merely see it as a public relations exercise. This extension aims to foster convergence by bringing together different stakeholders operating within the sustainability sphere. We plan to delve deeply into topics such as the differing approaches to sustainability between developing and developed countries\, potential synergies between profit-driven corporations and public institutions\, and corporate social responsibility initiatives and their impact on society and the environment. \nThrough an engaging program\, the extension strives to provide a platform for diverse stakeholders to learn from one another and engage in meaningful dialogue. Participants will have the opportunity to glean insights from keynote speeches delivered by leading scholars and executives\, engage in panel discussions featuring both academics and practitioners and cultivate valuable connections through networking opportunities. By facilitating such interactions\, this extension endeavors to catalyze collaborative efforts towards sustainable business models of the future. \nProgram \n\n08:30 – 09:00 Registration & Breakfast\n09:00 – 09:10 Welcome speech\n\nAyşegül Toker\, the Dean of Sabancı Business School\n\n\n09:15 – 09:30 Opening speech\n\nCevdet Alemdar\, the Energy\, Environment and Climate Change Round Table Leader at TUSIAD & Mobility Solutions SBU President at Sabancı Holding\n\n\n09:35 – 10:50 Strategy & Sustainability: The Academic View\n\nModerator: Remzi Gözübüyük\, Associate Professor of Strategy at Sabancı Business School\n\nJonathan Doh\, Rammrath Chaired Professor in International Business at Villanova University\nRodolphe Durand\, Joly Family Chaired Professor in Purposeful Leadership at HEC Paris\nOlga Hawn\, Associate Professor of Strategy and Entrepreneurship at the University of North Carolina\, Chapel Hill\nJasjit Singh\, Professor of Strategy and the Paul Dubrule Chaired Professor of Sustainable Development at INSEAD\n\n\n\n\n10:50 – 11:15 Coffee Break\n11:20 – 12:35 Strategy & Sustainability: Insights from Sector Leaders\n\nModerator: Murat Tarakçı\, Professor and Chair of Innovation Strategy at Rotterdam School of Management\, Erasmus University\n\nCevdet Alemdar\, the Energy\, Environment and Climate Change Round Table Leader at TUSIAD & Mobility Solutions SBU President at Sabancı Holding\nTankut Turnaoğlu\, AmCham Turkey Chair\, CEO and Chairman of the Board -Turkey\, Caucasus & Central Asia at Procter & Gamble\nCahit Erdoğan\, Assistant General Manager- Commercial and SME Banking Management at Yapı Kredi Bank\n\n\n\n\n12:40 – 13:35 Light Lunch\n13:40 – 14:55 Sustainability in Emerging Markets\n\nModerator & Speaker: Alvaro Cuervo-Cazurra\, Professor of International Business and Strategy at Northeastern University\n\nSinziana Dorobantu\, Associate Professor of Management and Organizations at NYU Stern School of Business\nElif Seçgin\, Principal at Boston Consulting Group\nIrina Surdu-Nardella\, Professor of International Business & Strategy at Warwick Business School\nMehmet Uvez\, Deputy Head of Turkey and the Head of Ankara Resident Office at the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development\n\n\n\n\n15:00 – 15:25 Coffee Break\n15:30 – 16:45 Stories from the Trenches: Sustainability Journeys\n\nModerarator: Ata Can Bertay\, Director of Corporate Governance Forum & Assistant Professor of Finance at Sabancı Business School\n\nPınar Akçayöz De Neve\, Private Sector Partnerships Program Analyst at UN Women\nGamze Gökçen Pilevne\, General Counsel\, Senior Compliance Officer\, ESG Coordinator & Corporate Secretary at Mercedes-Benz Türk\nDicle Kocaoğlu\, Sustainability Leader at Ford Otosan\nGiulio Nardella\, Associate Professor of Sustainability & Global Strategy at ESCP Business School\nDerya Özet Yargı\, Sustainability Director at Sabancı Holding\n\n\n\n\n16:45 – 17:00 Closing Remarks\n\nNüfer Yasin Ateş\, Hüsnü Paçacıoğlu Chair in Management and Associate Professor of Strategy and Organization at Sabanci Business School\n\n\n17:00 – 18:30 Guided Museum Tour & Networking Cocktail\n\nVenue \nSakıp Sabancı Museum \nAddress: Emirgan\, Sakıp Sabancı Cd. SUMMARY:Megafirms as Economic\, Social\, and Geopolitical Actors in Emerging Multipolarity
DESCRIPTION:Organized in partnership with the SMS Practitioner Strategy Committee\, this extension on mega firms serves as a springboard for the strategic management community to focus on the nature and implications of mega firms that are more than corporations and less than governments. There are various descriptions of what one looks like. Some argue that they employ at least 10\,000 employees\, while others focus on the percentage of the GDP it generates. Interestingly\, scholarly perspectives on the perils of market power combined with the regulatory pursuit of anti-trust policies make these mega firms’ existence and proliferation a mega puzzle of the 21st century. \nReceived wisdom in organizational economics and management\, going back to Knight (1933)\, Coase (1937)\, Penrose (1959)\, and Williamson (1967)\, assures firms cannot grow their size uninterrupted. Diseconomies of scale due to the managers’ bounded rationality and the increasing cost of control and coordination in growing bureaucracies constrain the growth of the firm size. Yet\, firms like Apple annually increase their employees by 10\,000\, and like Amazon\, can hold steady over one million employees in competitive markets. What changed in the 21st century to facilitate this uninterrupted growth? Are managers less boundedly rational? Are bureaucracies less costly to control and coordinate? Would these changes imply that a firm can grow like the proverbial beanstalk that could reach the moon? \nMost of these megafirms are also multinational corporations. Their large employee base combined with market capitalizations in the billions and trillions of dollars suggests that their strategies can be a source of seismic turbulence in the global economic (and world) order\, social fabric\, and even in geopolitics. One can argue that the US-led unipolar world order enabled and\, and in turn\, supported by the globalization of Western megafirms. Then\, does the globalization of non-Western megafirms like Alibaba depend on and facilitate the weakening unipolarity and the emergence of multipolarity in the world order? \nPanels’ topics of exploration include but are not limited to the following: \n\nHow did we end up with megafirms given contestable markets\, innovation\, and anti-trust regulation?\nCan we explain these megafirms’ investment choices (e.g.\, market entry/exit) using only the existing theories of competitive advantage and industrial organization?\nDo we need to incorporate political economy and international relations paradigms?\nWhat is the impact of new technologies on firm size?\n\n\nFor finance and investment planning\, are these firms investing like governments? What’s their time horizon? How will the market react to mega projects these firms undertake?\n\n\nGiven that megafirms have global\, political\, and societal impacts and economic and financial outcomes\, how should their performance be defined and measured?\nWhat is the relationship between megafirms and the emergence of a multipolar world order?\nAre the megafirms agents of their home countries or principal actors in the global competition for world order?\nShould megafirms be regulated? Can they be regulated?\nShould we revisit concepts like market power and price control considering the persistence of megafirms’ dominance in primary and critical sectors of the economy?\n\nThe organizers invite the strategic management community of academics and practitioners to participate actively in this day-long extension in two parts. The first part includes a panel of top executives of Koç Holding\, a megafirm of Turkiye in the Global Fortune 500\, to get an insider’s view on its organization\, management\, and growth trajectory at the cusp of its second century. There will be four moderated panel discussions throughout the day that allow ample time for audience participation and bring together academics and practitioners. Look out for future announcements about the extension with further details. \nWe expect the participants of the event to gain new insights into the operations of mega organizations\, from their HR policies to project selection and investment decisions. In addition\, there will be opportunities for networking. For academics\, the event presents an opportunity to extend their research on mega firms and to explore new theoretical and empirical paths. It is likely that scholars will come away with more questions than answers about existing management theories\, empirical approaches\, and the field’s understanding of the origins and implications of mega firms. \nSpeakers: \n\nSharon Alvarez (University of Pittsburgh) (addition)\nAlvaro Cuervo-Cazurra (Northeastern University)\nChristos Pitelis (University of Cambridge)\nSubramanian Rangan (INSEAD)\nMyles Shaver (University of Minnesota)\nAlain Verbeke (University of Calgary)\nYan Anthea Zhang (Rice University)\nExecutives from Koc Holding\n\nBige YücelLead–Country General Counsel & Board Member of Siemens Tuerkiye AHK Tuerkiye Vice President\nKumru Bektas–Strategic Planning and Efficiency Management Director (Yapı Kredi Bank)\nİlker Erden–Strategy and Business Development Coordinator and Co-leader of the Strategy Department\, (Koç Holding)\nArif Emre Keleş–Executive Director of Strategy (Beko)\nÇağatay Ölken–Executive Director\, Strategy and Sustainability (Tüpraş)\n\n\nCristina Caffarra (Economist\, Anti-trust expert\, Honorary Professor at University College London)\nEmre Karter\, CEO and Board Member of Citi Turkiye\nBurak Ayken–Strategic Planning Director (Eczacibasi Holding)\nAdam Job–Director of the Strategy Lab (Henderson Institute\, BCG)\n\nExecutives from Koc Holding: \nBige Yücel \nLead Country General Counsel & Board Member of Siemens Tuerkiye AHK Tuerkiye Vice President \nAs the Lead Country General Counsel and Board Member at Siemens Tuerkiye\, Bige brings nearly two decades of legal expertise\, having previously worked at prominent law firms such as Bıçakcı & Tanverdi and Hergüner Bilgen Özeke. SUMMARY:Disruptive Digital Technologies\, Data and AI: Implications for Innovation\, Entrepreneurship and Strategic Decision-Making
DESCRIPTION:Digital technologies have transformed a wide range of industries\, and digital companies are playing an increasingly important role in the economy. This has created an interest in understanding implications of how this forms our understanding of strategic management (Adner\, Puranam and Zhu\, 2019; Greenstein\, Lerner and Stern\, 2010)\, and opportunities for entrepreneurship (Ewens\, Nanda and Rhodes-Kropf\, 2018). Such differences are only being amplified with the growth of AI which is greatly impacting how firms compete\, and also new opportunities. \nThis SMS Extension brings together scholars interested in studying digitization\, innovation\, entrepreneurship\, AI and technology\, for a discussion of cutting-edge research on the topic. While these topics are garnering considerable attention\, research is only beginning to be published on this topic\, and scholars benefit from co-locating to discuss and develop papers on this topic. The event will also involve practitioners/managers from southeastern Europe\, including a number of local digital platform companies which have developed a unique approach\, developing a local solution to technology problems\, while inspired by ventures elsewhere. \nAdditionally\, the extension brings the SMS global community to a new and topically-relevant location\, where they can interact with local faculty (from Serbia and other universities in the region) as well as local business leaders and government leaders. The government of the Republic of Serbia has recently made an official commitment to positioning Serbia as a leading hub for cutting-edge scientific research and technology transfer in the fields of machine learning and AI\, leveraging what have been traditionally strong human capital expertise in domains such as engineering\, coding and computer science. This has been supported by a number of recent investments in AI-related initiatives\, including the establishment of the Institute for Artificial Intelligence Research and Development of Serbia. \nPreliminary Conference Program  \nWednesday\, October 16th \n\nText Analysis Workshop\nPhD Students Mentoring Session\nWelcome Drinks & Networking\nCity Tour\nConference Dinner\n\nThursday\, October 17th \n\nRegistration and Breakfast\nWelcome Address\nKeynote Panel: Beyond Disruptive Digital Technologies\, Data and AI: What’s next\n\nCarmelo Cennamo (Copenhagen Business School)\, Nan Jia (USC)\, Deepak Somaya (UIUC) & Yue Maggie Zhou (Michigan); Moderator: Milan Mirić (USC)\n\n\nPanel: Disruptive Technologies and the Future of Work: Innovative Approaches\n\nBožidar Vlačić (Catolica Porto)\, Aleksandar Nedeljković (Mainstream)\, Amisha Miller (NYU\, Stern School of Business) & Vukašin Grozdić (Ministry of Science\, Technological Development and Innovation\, Republic of Serbia); Moderator: Jovana Karanović (RSM\, Erasmus U)\n\n\nPanel: Platforms and Ecosystems\n\nNatalie Burford (IESE)\, Katia Meggiorin (Stevens)\, Dragana Jovčić (UradiZaradi) & Gabriele Santoro (U Turin); Moderator: Hakan Ozalp (U Amsterdam)\n\n\nPanel: AI and Managerial Decision-Making\n\nNur Ahmed (U Arkansas & MIT)\, Vid Štimac (UNDP)\, Stevo Pavićević (Franfurt School of Finance and Management) & Jose Ramon Saura (Rey Juan Carlos University); Moderator: Jelena Cerar (WU Vienna University of Economics and Business)\n\n\nPanel: AI\, Digital Technologies\, Innovation and Entrepreneurship\n\nMichael Christofi (Cyprus University of Technology)\, Rastko Damnjanović (Inclusio)\, Nebojša Bjelotomić (Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Serbia) & Nataliya Langburd Wright (Columbia Business School); Moderator: Veljko Jeremić (U Belgrade\, Faculty of Organizational Sciences)\n\n\n\nLunch and Coffee Breaks throughout the day\, with optional dinner in the Thursday evening \nAdditional Notes \nPhD Students are encouraged to register. SUMMARY:Competitive Strategy and Climate Change
DESCRIPTION:This interactive session will help attendees understand how they can get engaged in research on Competitive Strategy and Climate Change\, what types of actions companies take and risks they experience\, and what explains some of the heterogeneity among firms. We will have three junior scholars who will highlight the trade-offs that firms face when addressing climate change\, how they adapt to the threats posed by climate change\, and how their actions may differ from those of the public sector. They will discuss empirical and conceptual issues involved in this type of research: from building a novel dataset and using climate science data to key methods that may help categorize firm actions and expose the disconnect between what firms say they do and what they actually do to decarbonize. Bring your questions and be ready to engage with our panelists. We hope to encourage practically relevant research at this intersection! \nSpeakers: \nOlga Hawn \n \nOlga Hawn Associate Professor of Strategy and Entrepreneurship Sustainability Distinguished Fellow Faculty Director\, Ackerman Center for Excellence in Sustainability Associate Editor\, Strategic Management Journal Kenan-Flagler Business School University of North Carolina Chapel Hill Olga Hawn is an Associate Professor of Strategy and Entrepreneurship\, Faculty Director of Ackerman Center for Excellence in Sustainability and Sustainability Distinguished Fellow at the Kenan-Flagler Business School\, University of North Carolina Chapel Hill. SUMMARY:SMS Special Conference in Washington D.C.
DESCRIPTION:Strategies for Sustainable Human Development\nThis conference is designed to explore the intersection of firm strategy\, ESG\, and human capital from both an academic as well as practice perspective. The timing of this conference marks the five-year anniversary of the Business Roundtable\, an association of top CEOs\, in Washington\, D.C. that formed a commitment to track ESG efforts in business. As we reflect on this movement to redefine success from financial shareholder primacy to a broader stakeholder perspective\, we consider the progress with this call to address ESG in concert with the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals. In fact\, the UN SDGs are now used by hundreds of multinational companies to drive their ESG strategies. \nScholars and practitioners are increasingly focused on the environmental and especially the social performance of firms\, and have developed new models\, metrics\, and performance indicators to chart this progress.  They have explored the value and impact of ESG strategies for a wide range of stakeholders\, including employees\, investors\, and communities. At the same time\, questions have arisen about the authenticity and impact of these strategies\, and whether economic\, social and environmental goals are mutually compatible. Yet\, firms continue to rely on the development and availability of human capital as resource for competitive advantage around the world. \nAs firms work to address sustainability broadly\, the human dimension proves to be fraught with challenges due to societal trends\, political agendas\, workforce challenges\, labor constraints\, and global operations.  Firms must manage a myriad of internal and external stakeholders\, including consumers\, suppliers\, and broader communities. The human capital of a firm – whether embedded in the firm itself or part of a larger\, globally dispersed supply chain – provides a critical intersection with the social actions of the firm.  Beyond their immediate competitive concerns\, firms are increasingly taking public positions on social issues\, engaging and collaborating with NGOs\, and leveraging their resources for social or humanitarian causes. Hence the focus on this conference and the theme: “Strategies for Sustainable Human Development\,” as we consider internal human capital\, external stakeholders\, and society at large. \nTo advance this agenda\, the conference will feature three tracks that focus\, respectively\, on Contributing to Societal Health and Community Well-being\, Managing Firm Human Capital Sustainably\, and Enabling Educational Institutions and Equitable Opportunity. These tracks reflect many of the critical issues and questions associated with strategies for human development and allow for the examination of specific topics that comprise the challenges of realizing a more sustainable future. \nConference Program Chairs: \n\nJonathan Doh\, Villanova University\nDK Kryscynski\, Rutgers University\nRichard Smith\, Johns Hopkins University\nHeli Wang\, Singapore Management University\n\n  \nConference Location:\nThe conference will be hosted by Johns Hopkins University in the new Washington\, D.C. location at 555 Pennsylvania Avenue. Johns Hopkins is pleased to serve as host for this special SMS conference in this new university owned and operated facility.

SUMMARY:The Mendelian Executive and Adaptive Journeys
DESCRIPTION:The Behavioral Strategy Interest Group presents…\nA Masterclass on Adaptation with Daniel Levinthal\n  \n \nWe often speak of organizations as adapting to their environment; however\, a central facet of the “environment” for many organizational actors is the organization itself. The metrics by which individuals and initiatives within the organization are evaluated form an “artificial” selection environment within the organization. The potential loose coupling between such an artificial selection environment and a firm’s immediate competitive environment of the market both creates the space for strategic initiatives — a projection of future benefits to the organization that would not be reflected in immediate payoffs to the organization — and for potential pathologies of misalignment with the organization’s competitive context. While recent years have brought important attention to the role of experimentation and the associated learning that may stem from such efforts\, we have tended to under-attend to the associated challenges of interpretation. The artificial selection environment of the organization is an important facet of that interpretative process. Further\, an important dynamic of the organization is the possible adaptive dynamics of the selection criteria itself. These dynamics may be animated both by feedback mechanisms from the market and processes of population level learning and by contestation\, possibly power-based contestation\, within the organization. \n  \n \nDaniel Levinthal is the Reginald H. Jones Professor of Corporate Strategy at the Wharton School\, University of Pennsylvania. Levinthal has published extensively on questions of organizational adaptation and industry evolution\, particularly in the context of technological change with 70 articles and book chapters that have received over 20\,000 citations. He is a Fellow of both the Strategic Management Society\, the Academy of Management\, and the Academy of International Business. \n  \nThis webinar is FREE for SMS members\, and $19 for non-members.

SUMMARY:Strategy Imagination Forum Webinar Series: Isn’t It Time We Practice What We Preach?
DESCRIPTION:The higher-education industry has resisted change longer than most industries. While others have undergone transformations\, academia has clung to traditional teaching methods. Many professors have been reluctant to adapt\, persisting in lecturing from the same notes for years and dismissing calls to embrace more effective teaching and learning methods. But the grace period for this resistance may be ending\, as new approaches and competitors disrupt the conventional status quo.\nThis holds especially true and is crucially pertinent for business schools. Consulting firms\, online platforms\, and “corporate universities” pose growing competition for business schools. Since launching in 2014\, the McKinsey Academy has trained nearly 1mn individuals in areas such as digital transformation\, operations\, sales\, and sustainability. “Corporate universities”\, including one at Google and the Disney Institute\, have become widespread and are on an upward trajectory. The advent of the Internet ushered in a wave of online competitors for Business Schools such as edX\, Coursera and Udacity\, and as we enter a new technological era dominated by Artificial Intelligence (AI)\, we not only anticipate the strengthening of offerings from existing competitors but also foresee the emergence of a new generation of providers with an AI-first approach. \nIn this webinar\, Ithai Stern\, INSEAD professor of strategy and recipient of the SMS Educational Impact Award\, will explore how business schools around the world have been responding to these challenges. Pioneering transformative approaches to business school education\, Prithwiraj Choudhury (Harvard Business School)\, David Lefevre (Imperial College London)\, and Sven Van Stichel (Globis University)\, will share their expertise and insights.

SUMMARY:New Directions in Stakeholder Theory
DESCRIPTION:“In the 30 years since the University of Toronto hosted an invitational workshop on “”The Stakeholder Theory of the Corporation and the Management of Ethics in the Workplace\,”” later known simply as the “”Toronto Conference\,”” stakeholder theory remains an important area of study. It has grown in breadth and depth as strategic management scholars have increasingly turned their attention to rethinking and expanding its theoretical underpinnings\, as well as considering important questions related to environment\, social\, and governance issues (ESG)\, diversity\, equity and inclusion (DEI)\, social impact\, and the role of top executives in addressing these issues. The purpose of the 1993 Toronto Conference was to examine stakeholder theory in depth from several perspectives\, in the context of a highly focused mini-conference\, so that its emergence and acceptance as a paradigm for the field would be accelerated substantially. \nDrawing inspiration from the original Toronto Conference on stakeholder theory and the SMS Annual Conference’s return to a location so strongly associated with a critical period in the development of stakeholder theory\, this conference extension at the University of Toronto will focus on revisiting essential historical foundations of stakeholder theory and contemplate its future. Presentations\, panel discussions\, and breakout sessions will feature prominent scholars whose research has helped move stakeholder theory to its current prominent position in strategic management. Sessions will focus on the historical roots of stakeholder theory\, its current developments and applications\, novel contexts and methods for its advancement\, and future opportunities for research.”

SUMMARY:The Benefits and Challenges of Open Source: Fostering Innovation\, Igniting Growth\, and the Promise of Equitable Design
DESCRIPTION:“This one-day conference extension\, hosted by NYU Stern’s Center for the Future of Management\, explores “burning questions” about open source\, and specifically how it can be used to foster innovation and ignite growth while ensuring equitable outcomes for workers and other stakeholders. The program is designed to address Question #5 from the Six Big Questions of Strategic Management: How do organizations balance the need for innovation and growth with efficiency concerns and business model constraints? It will do so by exploring challenges and opportunities arising from the use of open source software. \nThe program will be organized around four sets of presentations (each followed by a moderated Q&A) that cover the following: (1) how best to define and measure open source? (2) how does open source affect entrepreneurship & innovation? (3) how does open source affect how firms are organized and grow? (4) how does open source affect workers in firms adopting it? The presentations will be delivered by a mix of junior and senior scholars\, as well as practitioners in government\, think tanks and industry.”
