SUMMARY:Strategic Choices in a Polarized World
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by the SMS Competitive Strategy Interest Group \nFree for Members | $29 for Non-Members \nCan’t attend live? We still encourage you to register — you’ll be among the first to receive the session recording once it’s released. \nPolarization increasingly affects organizational decisions often treated as separate from politics. Business leaders must consider not only whether to take a public position on sociopolitical issues or how to respond to activist demands\, they also must contend with how polarization affects a broad range of strategic decisions\, including hiring\, investment\, and stakeholder relationships. \nUnderstanding these consequences requires perspectives from across strategy research. This 55-minute webinar brings together four scholars whose expertise spans political risk\, social movements\, and behavioral research on decision-making under uncertainty. We will discuss how firms make strategic decisions amid political volatility and polarization\, and how activists and other stakeholders may respond. Drawing on academic research and experience in political consulting\, panelists will explore these topics and respond to your questions in an interactive webinar. \nPanelists: \n\n\n\n\n\nDaniel Blake\, IE Business School\nSinziana Dorobantu\, New York University\nKate Odziemkowska\, University of Toronto\nJ.P. Eggers\, New York University\n\nSinziana Dorobantu is Associate Professor of Management and Organizations at the NYU Stern School of Business. Her interests span the areas of nonmarket strategy\, global strategy\, geopolitics\, sustainability\, and political economy. Her research has been published in the top management journals and has been recognized with various research awards. She also served as an Associate Editor at the Academy of Management Journal between 2022 and 2025. For more information\, please see http://www.sinzianadorobantu.com/ \nDaniel Blake is an Associate Professor of Strategy and Director of the Strategy Research Group at IE Business School. His work spans nonmarket\, global and corporate strategy addressing a variety of questions including: how political and institutional environments shape international investment\, how social and political divisions affect firm strategy\, how firms respond when relationships with governments break down\, how firms and managers influence their political environments\, and how geopolitical change alters the basis of competitive advantage.\nDaniel’s research has been published in journals such as the American Journal of Political Science\, International Organization\, Journal of Management Studies\, Organization Science and Strategic Management Journal. Prior to joining IE\, Daniel was a Globalization and Governance Fellow at the Niehaus Center at Princeton University. He has been a visiting professor at INSEAD\, ESMT and ESSEC\, and he received a Ph.D. from the Ohio State University. \nKate Odziemkowska is an associate professor of strategic management at the Rotman School of Management\, University of Toronto. Her research focuses on nonmarket strategy\, including firms’ formal collaborations with nonmarket stakeholders\, corporate activism\, social movements\, and their effects on firm innovation and corporate strategy. Recently she’s been exploring the anti-ESG movement and firms’ backtracking on sociopolitical commitments. She is a Senior Editor at Organization Science\, and an International Research Fellow at the Oxford Centre for Corporate Reputation. \nJ.P. Eggers is a professor at NYU Stern. SUMMARY:AI\, Strategy\, and Risks in a Fragmented Geo-Economic Landscape
DESCRIPTION:FREE Strategy Imagination Forum Webinar! \nPrice: FREE for both members & non-members \nCan’t attend live? We still encourage you to register — you’ll be among the first to receive the session recording once it’s released. \nThis is a Strategy Imagination Forum (SIF) webinar\, part of the SMS webinar series and aligned with the Berlin 2026 conference theme: “Strategy in a Fragmented Geo-Economic Landscape.” \nThe fragmentation of the global economy into competing geopolitical blocs\, divergent regulatory regimes\, and contested domains of technology and data governance is reshaping the conditions under which firms make strategic decisions and manage risk. This Strategy Imagination Forum panel pairs a senior strategy practitioner with a leading AI technologist to examine how artificial intelligence both intensifies and helps address these pressures. Donatello Gassi (AWS) anchors the discussion in current technological capabilities\, from agentic AI to data sovereignty\, while Bruce Delteil (McKinsey) examines cross-border strategy and M&A\, where geo-economic fragmentation most directly conditions corporate choice. Moderated by Francesco Castellaneta (SKEMA and Université Côte d’Azur)\, the session considers not only how firms navigate these divides but how AI might help bridge them\, a research and policy agenda to which strategy scholarship is especially well-positioned to contribute. \nKey Takeaways \n\nHow AI is reshaping strategic decision-making as the global economy splinters into competing regulatory blocs.\nWhy data sovereignty has become a core strategic constraint\, and how firms can respond.\nHow firms navigate strategy and cross-border M&A under geo-economic fragmentation.\n\nPanelists \n\nBruce Delteil\, Managing Partner\, Vietnam Office & Asia Strategy Service Line Lead\, McKinsey & Company\nDonatello Gassi\, Head of Solutions Architecture\, Telecom (EMEA)\, AWS\n\nModerator: Francesco Castellaneta\, Full Professor in Strategy\, SKEMA Business School – Université Côte d’Azur (GREDEG) \n  \nBruce Delteil leads McKinsey’s Strategy Service Line across Asia and serves as Managing Partner of the Vietnam Office\, helping organizations sharpen their competitive positioning through cutting-edge approaches to strategy formulation and implementation. Across the region\, he advises C-suite leaders from local conglomerates to multinationals\, guiding them through complex business landscapes to unlock value and achieve sustainable growth.\n \n  \n  \n \nDonatello Gassi is Head of Solutions Architecture\, Telecom (EMEA) at AWS. MIT-educated\, he advises global companies on reinventing their business through cloud and AI\, with current work spanning agentic AI and data sovereignty. \n  \n  \n  \nFrancesco Castellaneta is Full Professor in Strategy and Entrepreneurship at SKEMA Business School and Université Côte d’Azur (GREDEG). He served in the leadership of the SMS Competitive Strategy Interest Group (2023–2026) and researches strategic management in the age of AI.

SUMMARY:Strategy Under Global Turbulence: Emerging Perspectives on Value Creation and Value Appropriation
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by the SMS Global Strategy Interest Group \nFree for Members | $39 for Non-Members \nCan’t attend live? We still encourage you to register — you’ll be among the first to receive the session recording once it’s released. \nThe global business environment is experiencing turbulence that is unprecedented in its concurrent breadth. Firms face global pressures from geopolitical fragmentation\, rising nationalism\, accelerated technological change including AI\, and climate change\, among others. These forces are materially shifting the conditions under which value is created and appropriated in ways that the established strategic management theories only partially capture. This panel convenes scholars and practitioners with diverse expertise to set an agenda for a sustained scholarly conversation on value creation and value appropriation under contemporary global turbulence. \nPanelists \n\nSrividya Jandhyala\, ESSEC \nMinyoung Kim\, The Ohio State University\nAllen Webb\, PwC \nLori Yue\, Columbia University\nMinyuan Zhao\, WashU\n\nSrividya Jandhyala is an Associate Professor at ESSEC Business School. Her research focuses on global strategy\, geopolitics\, international business\, and non-market strategy in the international context. It has been published in a wide range of journals such as Administrative Science Quarterly\, Strategic Management Journal\, Journal of International Business Studies\, Journal of World Business\, Journal of Conflict Resolution\, World Development\, and Strategy Science. \n  \nMinyoung Kim is the Fisher College of Business Distinguished Professor and Professor of Management in the Max M. Fisher College of Business at The Ohio State University. He investigates the intertwined nature of value creation and value appropriation along the three dimensions of the scope of the firm: geographic\, product\, and vertical integration. His current research explores barriers to imitation\, innovation strategies\, political strategies\, startup growth\, the theory of the firm\, and social network analysis. He has published articles in leading scholarly journals\, including Academy of Management Journal\, Academy of Management Review\, Journal of International Business Studies\, Journal of Management\, Journal of Management Studies\, Research Policy\, and Strategic Management Journal. \n \nAllen Webb is PwC’s Managing Director for Global Thought Leadership. He recently led the firm’s “Value in Motion” initiative\, examining scenarios for growth as AI\, climate change\, and fragmenting geopolitics reconfigure global industries. While at PwC he has led a reimagination of PwC’s Global CEO Survey\, and of PwC’s overall approach to thought leadership through the integration of previously siloed research and publishing organizations. Before PwC\, Allen was at McKinsey for 23 years\, serving as Editor-In Chief of McKinsey Quarterly for more than a decade and as lead project manager for the landmark study of IT and productivity growth in the 1990s. Allen is a graduate of Harvard College (BA in history) and the University of Chicago (JD and MBA in finance and economics); has worked as a Harvard Business School case writer; and has taught MBA courses in business history and global strategy at the University of Washington Foster School of Business. \n \nLori Qingyuan Yue is the Charles E. Exley Professor of Management at Columbia Business School. Her research examines the interplay among business\, society\, and government. Her recent research investigates how firms navigate the challenges of deglobalization and the resurgence of nationalism. She has developed a theory of organizational nationalism and used AI and Large Language Models to construct computational measures of nationalism at the firm level. She also co-founded the Nation and Nationalism Research Network\, a community of interdisciplinary scholars examining the evolving role of nation and nationalism in business\, society\, and geopolitics. \n  \nMinyuan Zhao is an Associate Professor of Strategy at the Olin Business School\, Washington University in St. Louis. Minyuan’s research examines the interactions between firm strategy and external environment in a global context. Her work on multinational innovation and intellectual property (IP) strategies has been published in top journals such as Management Science\, Strategic Management Journal\, and Journal of International Business Studies. She currently serves as Associate Editor of SMJ\, Senior Editor of MOR\, and on the editorial review boards of other top strategy journals. Prior to joining Olin\, Minyuan was on the faculty of Carlson School of Management (Minnesota)\, Ross School of Business (Michigan)\, and the Wharton School (UPenn). She was the recipient of multiple teaching awards from the Michigan EMBA program\, the NUS-UCLA EMBA program\, the Wharton School FT MBA program\, and WashU’s EMBA programs in both St. Louis and Shanghai. Her pre-academia life includes work experiences in entrepreneurship\, think tank\, and the automotive industry.

SUMMARY:Advancing Research on AI\, International Business\, and Global Talent
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by the Global Strategy Interest Group \nThis webinar brings together leading scholars to explore how artificial intelligence is reshaping international business and global strategy. As AI transforms how firms compete\, organize work\, manage talent\, and expand across borders\, it also raises important new research questions. The discussion will examine what AI means for global strategy\, how it is changing the geography and management of talent\, and what emerging research is teaching us about firms operating in an increasingly technology-driven world. \nFree for members | $39 for non-members  \nCan’t attend live? We still encourage you to register — you’ll be among the first to receive the session recording once it’s released. \nSpeakers \nPrithwiraj (Raj) Choudhury is a Professor of Organization Behavior in the Management Department at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) and a globally recognized expert on the Future of Work. SUMMARY:Past and Future of the Strategy Field: Healthy Plurality or Disintegration?
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by the Cooperative Strategies Interest Group \nFree for Members | $39 for Non-Members \nCan’t attend live? We still encourage you to register — you’ll be among the first to receive the session recording once it’s released. \nThe webinar will: i) explore whether the field of strategic management is healthy and slowly but surely accumulating knowledge over time\, or instead\, fragmenting into too many phenomenon-centric theoretically-disintegrated subfields that don’t cumulate knowledge (or that talk past to each other)\, and\, ii) discuss what is the role of theory\, of different kind\, in informing this dynamic and in resolving the tension between phenomenological fragmentation and the integration/accumulation of knowledge. \nJustin Frake (Ross\, Michigan) will start the webinar by presenting his work on “what is strategy?” which documents key trends in our field over the last decades. The patterns documented therein will be a shared context for debate and discussion. Joe Mahoney (Gies\, Illinois)\, Mary Benner (Carlson\, Minnesota; editor SMJ) and Rodolphe Durand (HEC Paris) will contribute their arguments\, own original work\, experience\, and vision related to these issues. \nPanelists:\nMary Benner is a Professor in the Strategic Management and Entrepreneurship Department. Her research\, at the intersection of organization theory and strategic management\, explores how firms innovate and adapt to technological changes. She has studied the effects of systematic process management practices such as ISO 9000 and Six Sigma on firms’ innovation and responses to new technologies\, and is currently examining the influence of financial markets and securities analysts in how established firms innovate and address the opportunities and challenges of technological change. Her research is published in leading academic journals and has won several awards\, including the Academy of Management Review’s Decade Award and Best Paper Award. She has been a Co-Editor of the Strategic Management Journal since January 2023. She served as a Senior Editor at Strategy Science in 2022\, as an Associate Editor at Administrative Science Quarterly from 2012 to 2021\, and as a Senior Editor at Organization Science from 2010 to 2012. She also serves on the editorial board of the Academy of Management Review. She has a PhD in management from Columbia University\, an MBA from Stanford’s Graduate School of Business\, and a BS in economics from the University of Minnesota. \nRodolphe Durand is the Joly Family Professor of Purposeful Leadership and the academic director of the Purpose Center. He founded the Society and Organizations Institute (S&O) and led it until September 2024. Rudy’s primary research interests concern the normative and cognitive dimensions of firms’ performance\, and especially the consequences for firms of defining their purpose and coping with the current major environmental and social challenges. As a member of Boards (in listed and private firms\, in non-profit organizations)\, the impact committee\, and the purpose committee (comité de mission)\, Rudy helps multiple organizations develop\, implement\, and assess impact strategies that value a firm’s purpose and its intangible assets. Rudy is also a prolific author of books where he puts in perspective the decline of ideologies\, the evolution of capitalism\, and the new foundations of management\, notably: Organizational Evolution and Strategic Management (Sage\, 2006)\, The Pirate Organization: Lessons from the Fringed of Capitalism (co-authored with JP Vergne\, Harvard Press\, 2013)\, and Organizations\, Strategy\, and Society: The Orgology of Disorganized Worlds (Routledge\, 2014). For his work\, he received the American Sociological Association’s R. Scott Award in 2005\, the European Academy of Management/Imagination Lab Award for Innovative Scholarship in 2010\, was inducted as a Fellow of the Strategic Management Society in 2014\, and was granted a Doctor Honoris Causa from UC Louvain in 2019. \nJoseph Mahoney is the Caterpillar Chair of Business at the Gies College of Business\, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. His research interest is organizational economics\, and he has published more than 90 journal articles\, authored the influential Economic Foundations of Strategy\, and served in leadership roles across multiple scholarly organizations. He was elected a Fellow of both the Academy of Management and the Strategic Management Society and was named one of Poets & Quants’ Top 50 Undergraduate Professors of Business.\nIn 2005\, he published Economic Foundations of Strategy\, which has been adopted by over 45 doctoral programs. He served as Associate Editor of the strategy field’s flagship journal\, Strategic Management Journal (2006-2015)\, and as Associate Editor of the Academy of Management Review (2018-2020). For the 2008-2009 academic year\, he served as Chair of the Strategy (STR) Division of the Academy of Management.\nHe is the winner of the Irwin Outstanding Educator Award from the STR Division of the Academy of Management. He has been elected to the Academy of Management (AOM) Fellows and to the Strategic Management Society (SMS) Fellows. \nJustin Frake research investigates how micro-level behaviors drive macro-level outcomes. Substantively\, my research focuses on strategic human capital\, misconduct\, and politics in the workplace. I created whatisstrategy.org to empirically investigate common concerns about the field of strategy. \n  \n  \n  \nModerators:\nFrancisco Brahm\nShivaram Divarakonda

What does this mean for scholars in strategic management? Four leading researchers share how they are integrating agentic AI into their own methodological practice\, from data collection and coding to analysis and writing. Matt Beane (UC Santa Barbara)\, Gwendolyn Lee (Purdue)\, Joshua Gans (University of Toronto)\, and Claudine Gartenberg (Wharton) discuss what works\, what fails\, and what guardrails matter. The conversation will address practical considerations such as reproducibility\, validation\, and transparency\, as well as broader implications for the craft of research itself. This session is intended for scholars at any career stage who want to think rigorously about when and how to deploy these tools in their own work. \n Matt Beane studies how we build skill in work involving intelligent machines like AI and robotics. His award-winning research has been published in top management outlets such as Administrative Science Quarterly\, Organization Science and Harvard Business Review\, he publishes in technical outlets such as CHI\, HRI\, he has spoken on the TED stage\, and he is the author of The Skill Code: How to Save Human Ability in an Age of Intelligent Machines (HarperCollins). He is co-founder and CEO of SkillBench\, a a platform that turns AI usage data into action – so CTOs can steer transformation and software developers can grow through it. In 2012 he was selected as a Human-Robot Interaction Pioneer\, and in 2021 was named to the Thinkers50 Radar list. Matt is a Digital Fellow with the Stanford Digital Economy Lab and MIT’s Initiative on the Digital Economy. \nJoshua Gans is Jeffrey S. Skoll Chair of Technical Innovation and Entrepreneurship and Professor of Strategic Management\, Rotman School of Management\, University of Toronto; Chief Economist of the Creative Destruction Lab and cofounder of All Day TA. He also holds honorary appointments in the Department of Economics and Munk School\, University of Toronto\, and Melbourne Business School and am affiliated with the NBER\, Schwartz-Reisman Institute\, Acceleration Consortium\, e61 Institute and Luohan Academy. He is also a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences\, Australia and the Royal Society of Canada.\nHe is an economist who studies innovation\, entrepreneurship\, and business strategy. My research focuses on how firms and markets adapt to technological change\, with particular emphasis on artificial intelligence\, blockchain technology\, and digital platforms. \n Claudine Gartenberg is Associate Professor of Management at the Wharton School\, University of Pennsylvania. Her research focuses on organizational strategy\, examining how ownership structure\, corporate purpose\, and compensation practices shape how firms compete and perform. Her work is published in leading journals including Management Science\, Organization Science\, and Review of Economic Studies.\nHer current research investigates how AI is reshaping organizations\, including how firms are restructuring decision-making\, reallocating work\, and repositioning strategically in response to these changes. \n Professor Gwendolyn (Gwen) Lee has published numerous research articles with managerial impact in premier academic journals\, including the Academy of Management Journal\, Academy of Management Review\, Organization Science\, Strategic Management Journal\, and Strategy Science. Her research program advances the frontier of strategic management by contributing novel perspectives to a foundational research question: How do firms respond to disruptions that change how value is created and captured? Gwen is exploring industry-shaping dynamics in the generation of sustainable energy\, the transformative impact of machine learning and AI on strategic decision-making\, and critical challenges in the governance of AI. She obtained her Ph.D. from the University of California at Berkeley (Management of Technology Fellow)\, and M.S. and B.S. degrees from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (Burchard Scholar). With her work experiences as an engineer\, management consultant\, and academic researcher\, Gwen has explored and enjoyed living globally in America\, Asia\, and Europe. She looks forward to opportunities for improving managerial practices and upgrading global human capital\, particularly through the integration of science\, technology\, engineering\, math (STEM) and business.
